“Thanks, Grandma. I had a really good time today. And thanks for the things you got me.” Those words warm my soul. I was already happy I could be with her and get those things for her, but her gratitude increases my happiness. You know the feeling exactly.
Did you know that expressing your gratitude to God adds to God’s happiness? Shocking that a human being can actually increase the pleasure of God! But we as parents and grandparents are pleased when our offspring appreciate what we do for them, right? It’s very satisfying to see the enjoyment our gifts bring the children in our lives. And it’s heartwarming when they thank us. It’s great when they appreciate just being with us and mention they had a good time with us. So it shouldn’t be surprising that God feels the same way about us, his children.
“the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.” Psalm 147:11
“Go and celebrate with a feast rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10
And expressing our gratitude makes us happy, too. Acknowledging that we are the recipients of good things from our heavenly Father reminds us we are not alone in this world. Someone greater and more powerful than us is on our side, looking out for us. There is a plan for us and the Planner is faithful and loving.
“Though I am surrounded by troubles,
you will protect me.
You reach out your hand,
and the power of your right hand saves me.
The Lord will work out his plans for my life—
for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever.
Don’t abandon me, for you made me.” Psalm 138
“you must celebrate this festival to honor the Lord your God, for it is he who blesses you with bountiful harvests and gives you success in all your work. This festival will be a time of great joy for all.” Deuteronomy 16:15
“Come and share your Master’s happiness.” Jesus in Matthew 25:23
